JOB DESCRIPTION:

An engineering professional who, working with little or no supervision provides owner representation to structural/architectural design reviews & forensic/failure analysis worldwide. As subject matter expert, he/she sets the scope; provide quality assurance and control for renovation/retrofit or new construction of manufacturing facilities, offices, laboratories, clean rooms, distribution centers and commercial facilities for a multi-national manufacturer of medical devices, diagnostics, nutritional and pharmaceutical products.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Identifies, estimates, plans and conducts medium- to large-size projects within engineering and quality specialty requiring custom, risk-managed execution plans, investigations and/or equipment. Manages multiple, often concurrent, projects and meets deadlines.

  • Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope and schedule; develops execution strategy including procurement; balances multiple demands within an assignment, e.g. executes contingency plans to recover from schedule slippage and financial overruns.

  • Understands the business needs of the company and has a thorough knowledge of the customer and clinical needs when developing a project scope. Stays abreast of and lends foresight to the incorporation of emerging technologies..

  • Works with marketing, product development, quality and manufacturing to establish scope, priorities, and schedules on multiple projects, e.g. examines the entire project planning process for a new product or complex project.

  • Independently performs economic analysis and feasibility studies related to complex and often multiple competing project alternatives. Responsible for achieving project financial targets in support of business objectives.

TECHNICAL/DESIGN

  • Benchmarks internally and externally. Analyzes business forces (customers, suppliers, competitors, technologies, government regulations) in major markets to identify trends and recommend responses, e.g. recommends a division-wide development program to introduce new technology.

  • Independently executes and/or directs others in the execution of: the design of products/processes/

equipment/systems/facilities by applying novel engineering theories, concepts and techniques within the disciplines.

  • Designs and leads complex experiments with multiple variables. Gathers data and performs detailed analysis. Assesses relevance. Communicates across functions and disciplines.

PROBLEM SOLVING/INNOVATION

  • Conceptualizes complete solutions. Creates or coordinates the design solutions for novel or complex problems; integrates regulatory and operational needs; assesses cost benefit, e.g. identifies processes and develops flow charts for a complex construction or manufacturing operation.

  • Explores multiple alternatives. Structures studies and integrates cross-disciplinary and cross-functional issues to arrive at optimal course of action, e.g. investigates process to meet increasing regulatory requirements while maintaining manufacturing/construction efficiency.

  • Applies technology in innovative ways. Combines technologies to anticipate or address customer needs; shares solutions across sites; employs proven solutions to increase effectiveness of engineering methodology or manufacturing process, e.g. incorporates process commonalities to reduce cycle time; attempts to leverage core technical competencies to its limit.

  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major projects within function through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies.

  • Has full awareness of the potential consequences (defects and failure modes) of design changes to established processes.

  • Mitigates risk within function through sound design, early risk assessments and implementation of fallback strategies.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Is identified as a Subject Matter Expert in the structural/architectural disciplines. Participates in internal, cross-divisional teams to develop and align procedures and standards.

  • Coordinates with technical support personnel to conduct prototype or experimental runs of products or processes.

  • Directs the efforts of others such as technicians and outside resources.

  • Performs tasks such as writing Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), safety/quality checklists, scope documents, etc.

  • Represents engineering on corporate and division task forces.

-Perform Supplier and Customer internal and external audits when requested.

  • Able to travel a minimum of 50% of the time.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES MAY INCLUDE

  • Provides mentoring in technical and organizational areas across multiple work groups; monitors the improvement of other engineer(s), e.g. delegates challenging tasks to others to help them develop; provides constructive and timely feedback.

  • Participates in the evaluation of assigned staff/project team members and in the identification of development needs.

  • May supervise other engineers or technicians.

Minimum Education

Indicate the minimum education level required to perform this job.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Structural Engineering or BS in Architecture or closely related discipline is required

  • Licensed or chartered structural engineer/architect with 8+ years of significant engineering, design, structural forensics and /or project engineering experience.

  • A post-graduate education/degree is desired and may contribute towards the desired years of experience. A foreign language is a plus (i.e. Spanish, Chinese).

Minimum Experience / Training Required

Indicate the minimum experience level and/or training required to perform this job.

  • Experienced in structural engineering systems, seismic design, wind engineering, geotechnical engineering, and sub-surface exploration, materials science, and structural forensics.

  • Familiar with contract document preparation

  • Required experience in construction inspection and testing

  • Good writing and presentation skills

  • Working knowledge of SI engineering units

  • Familiarity with ASCE I and II

  • Strong statistical background is a plus

  • Familiarity with FM Global Standards and building codes of countries outside the US

  • Has a career history marked by a consistent series of technical contributions and accomplishments. Significant contribution to architectural/structural design development or improvement through creative application of technical effort will equally be recognized.

  • Possesses a strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors. Exercises judgment and advises management as to the appropriate actions.

  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.

  • Preferred to have technical background in health care, nutritional products, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical, or similar industries.

  • Has demonstrated competency with financial systems and in fiscal control.

  • High level of basic demonstrated knowledge proficiency through Registration and / or Certification (i.e. Registered Professional Engineer, Licensed Architect)..
