AREVA AFS - Laboratory Responsible Engineer/Systems Engineer II-III (MOX) in Aiken, South Carolina


CBI/AREVA MOX Services, LLC is a consortium of companies based in Aiken, SC and formed to advance the Department of Energy's mission to dispose of surplus weapon grade plutonium. The plutonium is disposed of by mixing it with uranium and forming a mixed oxide (MOX) fuel for use in existing nuclear reactors. After the MOX fuel is irradiated in the reactor, the plutonium can no longer be used for nuclear weapons. AREVA Federal Services provides resources to MOX Services for the design, construction, licensing and operations of the MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) to be built at the Savannah River Site. Resources provided are in the following disciplines: Licensing, ES&H, Integrated Safety Analysis, QA, Engineering Assurance, Process Engineering, Systems Engineering, Design and Engineering (Structural, Electrical, I &C, Seismic, Nuclear Criticality, Piping, Mechanical, HVAC), Project Safety, Procurement, Project Controls, Software Design, Training, Records Management, Operations, and Information Technology.

AREVA Federal Services LLC, a subsidiary of AREVA, is seeking a Laboratory Responsible Engineer/Systems Engineer II-III. This qualified candidate will be assigned to the Mechanical Process Unit Team in the Chemical/Mechanical Engineering Group. He/she will be responsible for all aspects of their assigned units/systems.

Responsibilties will include:

  • Manage system responsibilities for a group of designated process units within the MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility

  • Ensuring the process unit safety basis is maintained, the design meets the functional needs of the MOX process, and applicable requirements from codes/standards are met.

  • Understand and maintain unit technical documents and must interface with other MOX Engineering personnel and other departments (Procurement, Startup, Operations, Construction, Security/MC&A).

  • Developing system/unit documentation (e.g., system design descriptions), reviewing system design drawings/documentation, providing expertise regarding system/unit operation, reviewing interfacing system documentation (P&IDs and equipment drawings)

  • Resolving room layout issues, defining equipment preventive maintenance requirements, providing relevant information to other disciplines (e.g., anchorage loads), and providing input regarding nuclear safety strategy, reviewing procedures, etc.

  • Review and approve technical submittals from suppliers.

  • Interface with equipment manufacturers as appropriate.

  • Interface with other discipline engineers.

  • Interface with the NRC and NNSA to resolve safety and design issues and make presentations to them.

  • All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position. *

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering/Engineering Technology, plus a minimum of 3-5 years related technical experience.

  • Laboratory process or equipment design experience.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Must be organized, pay attention to detail and provide consistent follow-up on issues.

  • Must possess self-start initiative, must be a team player, and must have a positive attitude toward the execution of assignments.

  • Must be flexible with the ability to handle several priority tasks and to lead others in reaching decisions and developing solutions.

  • Must be competent in the use of personal computers using common workplace software associated with Microsoft Office, with particular emphasis on Word and Excel.

  • Experience with nuclear process applications.

  • Experience working with or designing equipment and/or Gloveboxes used in nuclear process applications.

  • Familiarity/experience with laboratory processes.
