Functions in a Civil Engineer 1 capacity. Under close supervision, performs routine aspects of engineering assignments requiring knowledge and application of basic engineering principles. Applies knowledge of engineering principles to prescribed techniques and procedures to complete project assignments.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Engineering Standards: Develops familiarity by reading, understanding and applying departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies and procedures. Quality / Continuous Improvement: Develops an understanding and complies with the B&V quality program. Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts. Engineering Production: Contributes to preparation of less complex engineering deliverables such as drawings, reports, specifications, and studies of limited scope. Performs routine research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Collects, assimilates, and manages data for engineering work. Prepares basic engineering calculations following standard methods and principles used in similar engineering analysis. Understands and adheres to budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
Project Coordination: Shares information with others as requested. Coordinates with others when directed by supervisor or project leadership. Client Focus: Focuses on the needs of internal clients (project team leadership) while attempting to gain basic understanding of external client's main interests and drivers. May provide support to business development or pursuit activities. Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes.
Assignments are in conjunction with engineering, procurement, planning, designing, and construction of electrical generating power plants (Power Gen) and electrical transmission infrastructure (Power Delivery). Placement areas include:
Power Gen Structural
Prepares structural designs including: calcs, analysis, layout for the purpose of creating design deliverables, etc. Prepares specs and coordinates structural design effort with other disciplines. Evaluates and reviews manufacturers or contractor submittals.
Power Gen Civil
Candidate will prepare civil engineering designs for earthwork, grading and balancing, storm water drainage, detention pond sizing, culvert design, catch basin sizing, soil erosion control, civil specs, roadway design, and underground utilities. Design tasks include calcs, analysis, research, selection, layout etc. necessary to develop design deliverables. The position supports storm water management and/or soil erosion control permit process. Evaluates and reviews manufacturers or contractor submittals.
Power Delivery (PD)
PD placement areas may include Civil/Structural within the Substation Group or Transmission Line (T-Line) Engineering. Candidates will be selected and placed based on applicable coursework, experience, interest and available opportunity. PD rotation opportunities and split roles may exist based on availability.
The PD Substation Civil/Structural will be responsible for routine engineering assignments related to high voltage substation projects:
•Prepare calcs and designs for new and existing substations.
•3D structural modeling, analysis of new and existing steel and aluminum structures, steel detailing and preparation of fabrication drawings, design of deep and shallow foundations and associated reinforcement, anchor bolt, weld, connection, and oil containment design, preparation of BOMs.
•Assist in preparation of grading, drainage, stormwater, and erosion control designs and site permitting documents.
The PD T- Line Engineer will be responsible for routine engineering assignments related to T-lines:
•Prepare calcs and designs associated with new and existing high voltage T-lines.
•Assist with conducting analysis to develop design options or recommendations and assist in the preparation of designs, cost estimates, and specs of T-lines.
•Perform design loading calcs, 3D modeling, analysis of new and existing steel and wood structures, line routing, design of deep foundations and associated reinforcement, anchor bolt design, preparation of BOMs and T-line structure assemblies.
Requires a bachelor's degree (applicable to the position as noted below) from either a recognized ABET accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. No experience required.
•Power Gen Structural: Civil Engineering degree with Structural coursework emphasis
•Power Gen Civil: Civil Engineering degree
•PD Substation Civil: Civil Engineering degree
•PD Substation Structural: Civil Engineering degree with Structural coursework emphasis
•PD T-Line: Civil, Structural, or Mechanical with Structural coursework emphasis
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Learning on the Fly, Problem Solving, Intellectual Horsepower, Excellent Written and Oral Communication skills, Proficient computer skills, Drive For Results, Decision Quality, Informing, Listening, Dealing with Ambiguity, Basic knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline Basic industry and technology trends knowledge. Basic knowledge of company quality program. Basic knowledge of construction & constructability practices & principles.
Minimum GPA of 2.75. EIT registration preferred. The ideal candidate is interested in consulting engineering and the electric utility and energy industry.
Power Generation Structural: Knowledge of structural analysis/design software tools preferred.
Power Generation Civil: HEC-HMS, FlowMaster, CulvertMaster software tools preferred.
Power Delivery Substation: Knowledge of structural analysis programs (RISA, STAAD, SAP2000, LPILE, MFAD) and Microsoft Office a plus but not required.
Power Delivery T-Line: Knowledge of software programs PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, LPILE, MFAD and Microsoft office a plus.
