Job Summary

The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, forward thinking communication specialist with a background in executive level communication and organizational change management. The Communication Specialist will provide direct support for the Office of the CIO, include advising and supporting executive leaders on communication strategies and tactics. This role will execute effective employee communication, and support change management initiatives across the organization, based on the HITS strategic direction and priorities. The Communication Specialist will work in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment as a member of a multifaceted communications team. This person will work independently and proactively to support the strategic direction of the organization and provide support across the team on communication activities as needed.


  • Provide communication support for HITS executive leadership, based on strategic direction and priorities.

  • Support leadership and executive positioning by determining effective ways to motivate all levels of staff using communication. Collaborate with other key stakeholders to positively impact engagement and organizational effectiveness.

  • Translate technical or strategic topics into easily consumed, appropriate communication tailored to various internal and external audiences.

  • Develop persuasive speeches, stories, profiles, news and announcements for distribution to both internal staff and the broader UMHS community.

  • Lead the planning and execution of a variety of event communications, including on-site event and video support, remarks, run-of-show, written programs and press materials.

  • Research, write and implement communication plans designed to impact behavior and actions of faculty and staff.

  • Complete audience and change impact analysis to help inform communication needs and execution.

  • Leverage technology to optimize and increase innovative communication approaches to effectively reach all levels of an audience.

  • Assist with website management.

  • Develop, track and monitor communication measurements that are strategic, measurable, timely and realistic.

  • Work collaboratively with other department and UMHS communications representatives.

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of the HITS mission, vision and values. Serve as a communication coordinator for specific special projects or departments.

  • Participate in the design, development, and execution of communication resources including presentations, manuals, newsletters, brochures, flyers, handouts, and other program materials and coordinate publication of these materials.

  • Coordinate and track production of multiple deadline-driven projects, including multi-level vetting and approval processes.

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in communication-related field; journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or related field

  • Five to seven year's professional experience in public relations, promotion, marketing, communications, or change management in a professional setting

  • General knowledge of health care and academic medical centers

  • Experience supporting executive communication

  • Proven experience and ability to understand and translate strategic goals into a communication plan that resonates with a number of audiences

  • Ability to think long term, plan, set priorities, and execute with limited supervision

  • Must be comfortable in a multi-layered organization with complex relationship and executive reporting

  • Proven experience generating client satisfaction and developing solutions in complex matrix organizations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with solid understanding of digital media

  • Experience maintaining electronic communication vehicles, websites, blogs, social media

  • Track record of meeting deadlines and working in a fast paced environment, ability to be flexible to meet changing priorities

  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, ability to manage up and down, able to work in a team, effectively manages relationships

  • Self-starter with excellent project management skills, detailed oriented and organized with the ability to manage multiple duties and assignments

  • Communicates clearly in both written and spoken messages

Desired Qualifications*

  • Direct experience in a health care and/or academic medical center

  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan and/or the U-M Health System organizational structure, culture, operations and procedures

  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or web editing software
