Job Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) seeks a research administrator to perform duties related to sponsored pre- and post-award activities with an emphasis on pre-award. This position requires a proactive individual who will approach the work wtih a customer service orientation. The research administrator will report to the Research Manager and will work collaboratively with the Research Admin team for ME.

Responsibilities*

Pre-award activities include but not limited to:

Assist departmental faculty and researchers with proposal submissions to various federal and non-federal sponsors

Prepare budgets and other required sponsor forms

PAF preparation

Facilitate the preparation of IDC waiver requests

Coordinate cost-share requests

Monitor all proposals to meet agency and University guidelines, published timetables and deadlines

Liaison with ORSP

Post-award activities include, but not limited to:

Monthly review and monitoring of expenditures; making recommendations to keep within budget

Alert project directors and administration to any areas of concern

Tracking financial commitments

Monitor budgeted effort for personnel and initiate salary distribution changes as needed

Establish subaccounts and monitor subaccount activity

Establish subcontracts

Process post award changes

Prepare financial status reports and sponsor reports as needed

Research, analyze, and resolve sponsored project issues

Work with the Shared Service Center on missing documentation requests

Prepare journal entries

Review orders and travel charges

Prepare budget projections and re-budgets

Review FSR's

Resolve Uniform Guidance reports

Liaison with Sponsored Programs and ORSP

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, with a minimum 1 year of experience in grant administration or higher-level financial activities is required or relevant experience in a comparable environment with tight regulatory and compliance requirements; demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills are required; ability to interpret and communicate Department, University and Sponsor guidelines and policies; mastery of Excel and ability to adapt to changing technology is essential; must have the ability to work in a team enviroment, collaborate effectively with co-workers, and provide excellent customer service; ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment, follow work through to completion, meet high work standards, ability to set priorities and manage competing deadlines, along with attention to detail and dependability are essential.

Desired Qualifications*

Three-plus years of progressively responsible proposal experience. Knowledge of U-M financial practices and processes strongly preferred. Previous experence with the U-M eResearch Proposal Management system; previous experience with data mining in MPathways, Business Objects, and other complimentary systems is desired. Prior experience with federal funding agencies such as NSF, DOD, and DoE preferred.
