8B is a 32 bed General Medicine Telemetry Unit. The unit’s patient population consists of GI Bleed, CHF, pneumonia, DM, various cardiac arrhythmias, and overflow of oncology patients. The patient age range is young adult through geriatric.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
To develop, implement, coordinate and evaluate 8B’s new employee orientation program.
To identify 8B ongoing staff educational needs and facilitate in-services as appropriate to the needs of the nursing team.
To design and implement staff development plans. These activities are done in collaboration with the 8B Nursing Leadership Team.
To demonstrate the clinical nursing role through direct patient care, role modeling, and consultation to nursing and other members of the health care team.

Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Michigan.
Bachelors degree in Nursing or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Five (5) or more years on a step-down or ICU setting in the past seven (7) years
Demonstrated ability to facilitate change, direct nursing practice, prioritize, problem solve, evaluate outcomes and delegate as evidenced by previous employment experience.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills as evidenced by excellence in verbal and written communication skills among shifts, positive and professional attitude, and ability to provide direct and effective feedback.
Demonstrated excellent organizational, and leadership skills including working with a team.
Demonstrated excellent clinical patient care skills and problem solving skills.

ACLS certification preferred
Certified Med/Surg (RN-BC/CMRN) or Progressive Care (PCCN) preferred
Previous teaching experience.
High level of self-motivation and the commitment to improving patient outcomes.
Excellent customer relation skills and a commitment to the principles of Family Centered Care.
Ability to function independently and as part of a team.
Applies current literature/research to problems in practice area.
Able to set goals in self-directed manner.
Documented ability to effectively mentor nurse colleagues.
Knowledge of principles of adult learners.
Documented demonstration of professional behavior and effective leadership.
Knowledge of UMHS policies, procedures, and practices is desired.
Demonstrated unit and committee involvement with evidence of accepting increasing responsibilities as evidenced by two (2) or more years in the Charge Nurse Role, two (2) or more years of teaching skills including two years preceptor experience.
Hours/Week: 40 hours
Shift/Hours: Day/Evening shift , with occasional Day Shift fixed business time. *must be flexible to accommodate needs of the unit.
Location: University Hospital-8B Medicine Acute Care/Telemetry Unit.
**This position will be approximately 80% staffing.
All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
