University of Michigan Endoscopy Technician in Ann Arbor, Michigan
The Medical Procedures Unit is seeking an Endoscopy Technician who provides support to physicians and nurses as part of the endoscopic procedural team. Performs direct and indirect tasks which contribute to quality care for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures. Responsible for setting up, troubleshooting, assisting with, and pre-cleaning any/all endoscopic accessories and equipment. Transcribes patient information into electronic medical record. Assists with patient transports and endoscope reprocessing. Works under the supervision of a registered nurse and physician. Under FSLA, incumbents in this position are nonexempt.
Transcribe patient's medical and surgery history, medication, and allergies in the EMR.
Assist patients preparing for procedure as needed.
Make beds, clean rooms, serve as runners for equipment during procedure.
Transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher.
Properly position patients pre- and intra- procedure.
Select correct procedure endoscope and perform QC check pre-procedure.
Enter patient and procedure information into endoscopy report writing software program pre-procedure.
Handle and manage procedure accessory equipment, including control of the handle end of endoscopic biopsy forceps, polyp snares, endoscopic clips, and retrieval nets/graspers.
Airway support via head positioning and oropharyngeal suctioning.
Proficient detail with procedure specimen management.
Immediately post-procedure, perform endoscope pre-cleaning.
Expected to know the set up for numerous technical procedure and related equipment and accessories, including band ligation, liver biopsy, percutaneous gastroscopy tube placement, and other less common procedures. Becoming proficient with these skill sets often takes a full year.
Troubleshoot problems with the endoscopes and needed support equipment including suction machines, CO2 pumps, and water pumps.
Perform high level disinfection for endoscopes and accessory reprocessing.
At UH-MPU, responsibility for on call coverage for Saturday clinic cases.
Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work well in a team setting. Excellent communication skills. Recent experience in an outpatient setting with a good attendance record. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
Knowledge of University of Michigan policies and procedures helpful. Previous experience in a Medical Procedures Unit.
Days, 40 hours per week, 10 hour shifts, variable hours between 7:00am and 7:00pm, Monday through Friday. Specialty service and/or weekend/holiday on call coverage.
