This position is located in the Mental Health Unit at the Branch Health Clinic, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, South Carolina. The purpose of this position is to provide care to patients of the Mental Health Unit and the Deployment Health Center.

Provide direct patient care and clinical supervision for psychiatric patients. Provide treatment services in the capacity of, but not limited to, consultation, partial hospitalization or day programs, emergency psychiatric, inpatient and outpatient services. Examine and conduct through evaluations of presenting patients including integration of laboratory, radiological and clinical findings prescribing appropriate pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment of referrals to appropriate specialty clinics.

A typical day in the life of a Physician (Psychiatrist)

  • Make fitness for duty and other administrative determinations on active duty members completing appropriate paperwork for disposition.

  • Maintain health and clinical records in accordance with current regulations and standards.

  • Provide professional consultation, supervision, and collaborative medical support to other professional staff and providers.

  • Participate in department and hospital performance improvement activities and make recommendations on improvement of work methods and organizational features.

  • During periods of reduced staffing, may be required to stand an after- hours emergency watch.

Applicants must meet the following:

  • Degree: MD or DO from an accredited school in the United States or Canada. Is your degree from a foreign medical school? If yes, then you must have a Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or fifth pathway certificate. Please make sure your resume reflects your ECFMG certificate number or fifth pathway certificate including date awarded. Also, please be prepared to provide your official college transcript and/or certificate upon request at a later date. AND

  • Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining your MD or DO, your resume must show 5 years of residency training in Psychiatry or equivalent experience and training (e.g., completion of 3 year Psychiatry residency and 2 year of experience as a Psychiatrist). Please make sure your resume reflects the location, duration, and specialty of your internship, residency, etc. AND

  • Licensure: Permanent, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in any State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.


Satisfy BUMEDs clinical privileges requirements which, in addition to the above, include the following:

  • Completion of a residency program in Psychiatry approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospital of the American Association or American Osteopathic Association, board certification or board eligible.

  • Current competence (e.g. privileged to independently practice as a Psychiatrist within the past 2 years, actively practiced with the past 2 years by having encountered a sufficient number of clinical cases to represent a broad spectrum of the privileges required.

  • No health status contraindications to granting clinical privileges.
  • Board certification in Psychiatry is desired, but not required.
