The Advanced Medical Support Assistant position is located at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts. The incumbent is responsible for the administrative management of the various clinical services such as Specialty and Acute Care, Primary Care, Geriatrics & Extended Care, Mental Health, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Non-VA Care, Women's Health, Dental, Compensation and Pension, Social Work, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. The duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- establishes, monitors, and evaluates all administrative procedures of the clinics;
- transcribes orders and other data and arranges for proper scheduling of consults;
- ensures health information, documentation requirements are met for each patient's clinic appointment;
- answers questions about non-clinical issues;
- enters data pertaining to and ensures accuracy of information such as patient demographics, means testing, insurance, etc.;
- works with professional staff to expedite emergency requests for daily patient care;
- keeps the various clinical services up to date with the current administrative practices and regulations pertaining to patient care;
- orients new administrative staff working in the various clinical services;
- provides statistical data from mandated reports;
- serves as liaison to inpatient operations; and
- participates in continuous quality improvement activities.
Work Schedule:Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM

GS-06 Advanced MSA
Experience -One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.
Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.
Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care.
Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.
Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.
Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.

Physical Requirements: Use of fingers; both hands required; walking/standing 8+ hours; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; hearing aid permitted; emotional/mental stability; work closely with others. The majority of work is performed in an office setting, primarily while seated. The position requires some standing, ambulation, bending and carrying of items such as training manuals. In addition, there can be increased stress due to the intensity of a patient/customer complaint or concern.
