The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to the following:
- Establishing priorities, allocating resources, and supervising the mobilization, demobilization, and reassignment of wildland fire suppression resources within the local, geographic, and national area.
- Providing leadership in support of interagency resource management activities such as aircraft flight following, law enforcement assistance, search and rescue coordination, and all other all-risk activities according to policies.
- Preparing budget recommendations and estimates for the Dispatch Center, and ensuring cost effective management of the Center.
- Coordinating professional and technical dispatcher training for Zone, Geographical and National dispatch operations.
- Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work.
- Developing performance standards and evaluating work performance of subordinates.
- Giving advice, counsel, and instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters.
Occasional travel - At times, travel for meetings and/or training may be required.

Expanded Dispatch Support Dispatcher (EDSD). Currency is not required; however, applicants must have held the full qualification at some point in their career.

S-491 "National Fire Danger Rating System"
- Wildland Firefighting Experience Requirement: This position requires previous wildland firefighting experience (at least 90 days). Wildland firefighting experience is defined as experience gained through work on the fire line in containment, control, or suppression of wildland fire. Experience may be related to wildfires or fire line experience on a prescribed fire (this does not include experience in the planning stages). For GS-11:In addition to selective factors: 1 year of directly related, specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for the GS-11 level include service such as analyzing and applying fire management strategies with experience in activities such as; mobilization and dispatch coordination, fire prevention and education, training, logistics, equipment development and deployment, fire communication systems, suppression and preparedness, and aviation.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
- Supervisory Probationary Period: If you are selected for this position, you will be required to serve a one year supervisory probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.
