The incumbent's main duties will be to manage the MUSE System which is the database for all EKGs, Holter Monitor and Exercise Stress Testing EKG strips recorded during studies. The selectee must be proficient in typing , detailed orientated and organized which is needed to accurately collate newly transmitted ECGs for distribution to the Cardiologist and editing of final interpretation upon return. The incumbent is responsible for checking patient information, timely transmission, and prompt editing of EKGs, Holters and Stress tests. In addition, the technician is responsible for acquiring EKGs from 3PM to 7PM on the wards and whenever requested at other times during their tour. Incumbent must be able to acquire EKG tracings of good quality and recognize malignant arrhythmias. Technician must be able to sit for long periods of time and be able to maneuver body in order to acquire EKGs on inpatients. Incumbent is responsible for sorting EKGs for encounters into the proper EKG clinics and completion of encounters using the accurate applicable codes. In addition, the incumbent will be trained in applying various cardiac monitors. WORK SCHEDULE: Full Time, Monday through Friday, 11:30am to 8:00pm. Required to work Holidays that fall on Tour of Duty.

Initial appointment to this position is subject to the recommendation of a professional standards board and approval by the Medical Center Director. Grade and salary will be recommended by the board and is based on the personal qualifications of the candidate (i.e. education, certification, experience, etc.) NOTE: Current or Former Federal Employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure, and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. NOTE: Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Basic Requirements U.S. Citizenship: To be eligible for appointment in VHA, an applicant must be a citizen of the United States (U.S.) English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
* Physical Examination: * Selected candidates for this position must undergo a pre-employment medical examination and be found suitable to perform the essential duties of a Medical Instrument Technician. (These medical exams are conducted by the VA at no cost to the candidate).
Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification.
GS-6 Qualification Requirements In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicant must have: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-5) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. The duties include clerical functional duties in a medical setting, acquiring EKGs, and entering patient information as required on ECGs.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Ability to recognize special patient needs such as disabilities, impaired mobility, and complicating medical conditions in order to prepare and position the patient for the prescribed procedure.
Knowledge of the specialized equipment and accessories appropriate to Holter monitoring and ability to perform such tests.
Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques and ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment.
Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions and take appropriate action.
Ability to operate the equipment to perform standard and routine highly specialized procedures including exercise stress testing.

The work requires an individual with dexterity of all extremities. Individual will be standing for a majority of the working hours, but will also include some walking, bending, lifting and carrying of items. Work also requires transferring and moving patients on stretchers and moving heavy endoscopy equipment carts. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients.
