CIRES Associate Director for Operations
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for the position of Associate Director of Operations to join its leadership team and manage its administrative functions. CIRES is an environmental research institute established by a cooperative agreement between the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Approximately half of the CIRES research portfolio is funded through the cooperative agreement and involves work directly in support of NOAA and the NOAA mission. This work is carried out by our more than 350 Research Associates and Professional Research Assistants at the David Skaggs Research Center in Boulder, Colorado. The remainder of CIRES' research activities are supported primarily through federal grants from a wide range of agencies (NASA, NSF, DOE, etc.) as well as funds from various state, foundation, and other sources. CIRES also supports 20 University of Colorado faculty members who are affiliated with departments across campus. CIRES conducts research in the physical, ecological, and social sciences at spatial scales ranging from the molecular to the global and at time scales that span minutes to millennia. The Associate Director for Operations will be responsible for the effective management of the groups within administration that include finance, human resources, information technology, facilities management, events, etc. Review of applications will begin May 22, 2017.
Direct all administrative departments at CIRES to ensure that the deployment of CIRES financial, capital, and operational resources are optimized to promote efficiency, integrity, and alignment with the goals of CIRES and the university.
Drive the development of operational policies and procedures that integrate fiscal, human resource, space, and other operational considerations to advance CIRES' research, educational, and service missions.
Maintain a customer-service culture within the administrative functions of the institute, ensuring that the internal customers' and external stake-holders' needs are met in an efficient, respectful, and professional manner.
Serve as an internal business consultant to the Director. Create and maintain a strong performance culture for the institute.
Operational Leadership: Oversee all operations within the organization. Provide a focus on efficiency, effectiveness, and customer support. Think creatively and strategically to develop and improve operational systems, including systems that are already performing well.
Strategic Lead ership: In a climate where fiscal constraints continually exist, ensure a sustainable business model that promotes innovation in administrative practices and will continue to support CIRES competitiveness. Provide leadership that brings innovative solutions to business challenges and changes that impact CIRES' performance. Develop collaborative and transparent processes for prioritizing activities and allocating limited resources.
Relationship Building: As one of the executive leaders at CIRES, reporting to the Director, develop strong relationships internally and externally with colleagues, stakeholders, and staff. Be accessible and responsive, serve others by effectively addressing problems. Demonstrate an ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization. Be empathetic and motivating.
A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and 8 years of increasingly responsible management experience
Direct experience in administrative or financial leadership in a higher education, government, or business organization with financial, human resource, and operational responsibilities
Demonstrated ability to lead various administrative teams. A strong record of successfully recruiting, developing, and mentoring a diverse and talented staff, and a commitment to the professional development of staff through delegation of responsibility and expert tutelage
Experience with budgeting, proposal development, and grants management, with government and/or private research sponsors
Demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships with co-workers and peers
Strong communication skills
A record of ensuring that organizational structure and administrative functions are targeted at achieving institutional objectives
Strong problem-solving abilities
Strong service orientation
Desired Qualifications (Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired, but not required)
Master's degree in business or related field
Experience working in research/academic environments. Experience with university financial processes and procedures
Experience managing administrative areas including, finance, contracts and grants, procurement, human resources, information technology, facilities management, communications and outreach
