The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center is a 673-bed tertiary healthcare facility which provides care to over 100,000 veterans in northern Ohio. We provide care through our main medical facility at the Wade Park campus, 13 community based outpatient clinics, and 3 vet centers. The medical center has been recognized for more programs of excellence than any other Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for a Nursing Assistant. The Nursing Assistant will function in the Community Living Center (WCT5) within Nursing Service. The Nursing Assistant duties include:
- Providing patient centered care for residents with dementia.
- Assisting with serving meals, feeding dependent patients/residents diets as ordered by the provider.
Assisting medical personnel in the care or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
Monitoring and recording vital signs, weights, and heights.
Performing a variety of routine tests including but not limited to nares swabs, glucometer sticks, EKG, and bladder scans.
Preparing, ambulating, transporting, and positioning the patient.
Assisting the physician/nurse in a variety of examinations and treatments.
Reporting observations and changes of the condition of acute or chronic phase patients.
Providing a variety of personal care including but not limited to bathing, shaving, feeding, incontinence care, trimming nails, range of motion, and ambulation of patients.
Performing a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient.
Following designated charting techniques to post to patients' charts that provide a daily outline or summary of the patient's care.
Setting up various types of complex medical equipment.
Educating the patient and family member on specific health information based on the patient's condition.
Assisting with admission packets including basin, pitcher, incentive spirometer, urinalysis cup and nares swab.
Assisting nursing staff with one hour rounds.
Assisting nursing staff with answering call lights.
Work Schedule: Day Shift (7:30am - 4:00pm), rotating to Evening Shift (3:30pm - midnight)/ Nights (11:30pm - 8:00am) as needed .Rotating weekends and holidays. Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
Education or Training: One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
Grandfathering Provisions: All Nursing Assistants employed in VHA effective 3/26/14 or prior are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.
Minimum one year Nursing Assistant experience in long term care setting.
Minimum one year Nursing Assistant experience in memory care or dementia care.
Quality of Experience: To be creditable, NA experience must be documented on the application or resume and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.
Part-Time Experience: Part-time experience as a NA is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time work week. For example, a NA employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time work week of credit for each 2 weeks of service.
To qualify at the GS-3 Level: No requirements beyond the basic requirements.
To qualify at the GS-4 level: One year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;
Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians.
To qualify at the GS-5 level:
One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree.
Grade Determinations are based upon the VA Qualification Standards which can be found in VA Handbook 5005/81, Part II, Appendix G46.

Physical Requirements: applicant must possess the ability to lift and carry 45 pounds and over, pull, push and reach above the shoulder, and walk, stand, kneel and bend repeatedly.
