The Fargo VA Health Care System is a Level 2 Medical Center and a member of Veterans Integrated Service Network 23. This facility combines a 39 bed medical facility along with a 38 bed Community Living Center providing transitional care, both accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Fargo also has a Department of Veterans Affairs Benefits Office on campus, offering veterans the unique opportunity to obtain health care, benefits services, and Readjustment Counseling at one location. Due to the growing veteran population in our service area, ten Community Based Outpatient Clinics have been established. The Fargo Health Care System provides a wide spectrum of primary and tertiary acute and extended care inpatient and outpatient activities in an academic setting. The Fargo Health Care System has an active research program and has a successful affiliation with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.

The goals of the Hospitalist Service are to mentor and lead competent, satisfied staff dedicated to providing high quality patient-centered care at the Fargo VA Health Care System (FVAHCS). The Chief, Hospitalist Service is a department-level management position supporting this goal through direct patient care and administrative leadership. The incumbent is responsible for the management and oversight of clinical operations within the Hospitalist service. These duties include supervision of physicians and mid-level providers, coordination of work schedules and responsibility for clinical performance measures. The incumbent works closely with other leaders within the service line and facility to ensure optimization of resources in the care delivery model. Additionally, h/she participates in local administrative, management, quality assurance, and other assignments, meetings or committees as necessary.
Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 0800 1630. However the tour of duty will be considered flexible so as to meet the needs of the service. For example, the Chief would be expected to fill in for planned as well as short notice absences of his/her staff. In that case, the tour of duty may be either 7AM 7PM or 7PM 7 AM (12 hour shifts).

May serve as Assistant Chief of Staff, Specialty Medicine (ACOS, SM) when s/he is absent.
Ensures that operations issues/problems are resolved in a timely, logical, step-wise fashion with clear resolution, implementation plans and communication to staff.
Excellent communication skills are a key competency for the position. The incumbent will be expected to facilitate communication up and down the Service Line and will be the primary conduit of information to his/her colleagues/subordinates as well as to Service Line leadership.
Responsible for the development of mechanisms to assure staff competency and continuing education compliance including a comprehensive new employee orientation program for the SL.
Establishes employee performance plans which reflect employee's duties/responsibilities and align with Agency and Departmental goals and objectives. Responsible for evaluating and communicating employee performance in a timely manner.

- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Board certification or possess equivalent training and experience.
