Job Description The AVP, Data Scientist will be an integral part of LPL Financial's Investment & Planning Solutions (IPS) group, which is responsible for driving the strategic view and development of product and platform management, including promotional activities of LPL’s advisory and brokerage business. The overall objective of the group is to ensure that LPL has a highly competitive set of products and platforms, that are managed in a way to optimize profitability and that the promotional activities meet the needs of our financial advisors, drive sales, and inform internal business partners.

The AVP, Data Scientist sits within the Business Intelligence (BI) team under the IPS group, and plays an instrumental role in the distribution strategy, reporting, and analysis of LPL’s investment solutions. It interfaces directly with the sales and product promotions teams by delivering insights with the goal of informing sales tactics and strategies to improve the firm’s sales effectiveness. The BI team analyzes platform, product, and economic trends for the purposes of engaging with the management team to influence opportunity development while improving the firms risk profile and economics. Additionally, the position works closely with partners in Finance and Technology to share information and ensure that the team is appropriately leveraging LPL’s systems and best practices.

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to structure and develop recommendations to solve complex problems leveraging advanced analytics (data mining, predictive modeling and machine learning)

  2. Develop deep analysis on how sales activities, advisor trends, and marketplace events impact sales of different products. The focus of the output should be to provide senior management an understanding of ‘why’ sales trends are occurring and to equip management teams with information and insights to develop the ‘how’ to respond

  3. Develop models such as life time value to understand profitability of different customer segments and influence service and support offerings

  4. Partner with Product Management and the Sales team to develop ideas for further exploration and modeling

  5. Conduct ad-hoc analyses as appropriate to support priority business projects; Respond in a timely manner to ad hoc questions from executives

  6. Collaborate and build effective relationships with business partners across the company

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Decision Information Science, Finance, Economics, or related discipline is required

  • Master's degree in Statistics, or other relevant advanced degree is strongly preferred

  • At least 8 years of related work experience, Financial Services (Investment Services) industry experience is preferred

  • Minimum of 2-3 years in an advanced analytical function is required

  • Very skilled in advanced analytics, including predictive modeling and machine learning algorithms

  • Proficiency in statistical analysis tools such as R (preferred), SAS, or SPSS.

  • Experience working with relational databases, e.g., SQL Server, Access, Oracle and with financial modeling

  • Sufficient familiarity with master data management, business intelligence, and CRM (e.g., SalesForce or Siebel) to interface with the technology organization

  • Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office product suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), including a strong ability to visually convey information and insights through graphs, charts, and other means

  • Exceptional problem solving skills that enable efficient identification of issues, development of hypotheses, and the execution of robust quantitative analyses to answer business questions

  • Ability to translate findings into business insights and to communicate them in a way that is clear and meaningful for senior management

  • Extensive project management experience and a proven ability to contribute to and/or manage multiple projects at once in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to synthesize and work with various data types from a variety of sources, e.g., operational, transactional, financial, survey, third party vendor, and macroeconomic

  • Ability to connect outside (industry and competitor) observations with views of the LPL business

  • Strong team work and experience in collaborating with individuals across lines of business, functional areas, and different levels of an organization

  • Action oriented, willing to take the initiative, and a desire to roll-up sleeves and dig into the depths of the business
