The Iowa City VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for one (1) Supervisory Medical Support Assistant for the Medicine Service Line. This position is located in Iowa City, Iowa.

The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Medical Support Assistant within the Medicine Service Line. The Supervisory MSA serves as a staff resource to the Chief of Medicine, providing leadership and guidance to employees performing duties supporting the service line. The incumbent will assist in the development of performance standards, writing functional statements, conducting complain resolution and service recovery, assist in evaluating work performance, counseling of employees, and initiating disciplinary action when indicated and as appropriate. The Supervisory MSA develops workload distribution models, sets and assesses team goals, and assigns work based on data and information which changes daily. The incumbent requests and justifies workload redistribution and recruiting actions, interviews and selects new employees, and is responsible for orientation, instruction, and development of employees in administrative tasks and personal development; securing, approving, and arranging resources for continuing education of employees based upon recognized and required education and training.
The incumbent performs a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and other members of the medical team who provide direct patient care. The Supervisory MSA in this assignment is a chief source of information and plays an independent role in coordinating and accomplishing the work of the unit. The Supervisory MSA is responsible for operational integrity and control of the full range of administrative support activities in Medical Services, including outpatient clinic areas and inpatient units.

- Experience and Education.
(1) Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or
(2) Education. One year above high school; or
(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

- English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. *Grade Determinations: *
(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
(b) Assignment. Supervisory MSAs plan and direct programs at medical centers and/or satellite outpatient clinics and have full supervisory responsibility. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met; evaluating new products, equipment, and systems in order to make recommendations for improved operations; identifying educational or training needs; making final decisions on selections; evaluating performance, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. The employee has full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the MSA's activities. Responsible for extracting and analyzing data in order to provide reports in support of performance measures to senior management. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.
Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.
Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development and training.
Ability of delegate authority, evaluate and oversee people and programs, accomplish program goals, and adapt to changing priorities.

Physical Requirements: The duties and responsibilities of the position require some mobility between areas within health care system, but generally the job is sedentary with some standing, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 20 pounds. Incumbent is required to work with computer equipment at least 75% of the time which impacts hand and wrist motions. Primary work location is indoors, with adequate light and ventilation, but incumbent may be exposed to normal office irritants, such as allergies or low levels of noise. When traveling through health care system, may require travel outside, which could involve exposure to different types of weather.
