Position Description

Anti-infectives represents one of seven core therapeutic areas at Allergan and the company is committed to supporting its three branded antibiotics (Teflaro®, Dalvance™ and Avycaz™) that have recently launched on the US market, as well as other products at earlier stages of development. The Clinical Microbiology team has been re-established at the Irvine, California site with a new state of the art microbiology laboratory to support the continued evaluation of branded antibiotics and other compounds in the Allergan anti-infective portfolio.

Allergan is seeking a Professional in clinical microbiology to help support the company’s anti-infective franchise at all stages of clinical development.

Main Areas of Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Senior Scientist to ensure the efficient day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including monitoring and ordering of supplies

  • Perform R&D studies on pre-clinical and marketed antibacterial agents

  • Conduct in vitro studies of pre-clinical and market compounds to support future regulatory submissions, to provide support for approved antibacterials, and to evaluate potential in-licensing candidates

  • Writing study reports

  • Conducting and managing laboratory-based microbiology studies on the branded antibiotics and pre-clinical compounds that will include:

  • Antimicrobial susceptibility testing against clinical isolates

  • Spectrum of activity studies

  • Specialty studies (e.g. time kill kinetics, synergy and PAE)

  • Molecular characterization of resistant isolates

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting commercial antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods for testing approved products


The following listed requirements need to be met at a minimum level to be considered for the job:

  • One to five years of experience in laboratory research in an area relevant to anti-infective drug development

  • Broad knowledge of clinical microbiology and infectious disease

  • Ability to work both independently as a sole contributor and in a multi-disciplinary team environment

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to present data and key findings

  • Familiarity with database programs, Excel, and Word

  • Committed to self-development and professional growth; solicits feedback from others


  • A Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related discipline
