The selectees for these positions will serve as an Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) assigned to the Department of Occupational Health Branch Medical Clinic Sasebo Japan or the Branch Health Clinic (BHC), Iwakuni, Japan. The OHN manages, develops, implements and monitors programs, which support the overall goals of Occupational Health and Preventive medicine for all the commands and tenants. The OHN is a registered nurse with significant clinical skill, who has acquired specialized knowledge in Occupational Health with background in toxicology and related industrial illnesses and safety. This background is required to assess and identify potential health problems, set a plan of action, identify and prevent the more insidious health effects, possibly produced by long term chronic exposure to toxic chemical agents, ergonomic factors and harmful physical agents, including noise, asbestos, and chemical agents encountered in the workplace.

A typical day in the life as the Occupational Health Nurse:

  • Function as the Occupational Health Nurse, tasked with management and oversight of all occupational health related medical certification and medical surveillance programs for naval commands connected to the clinic.

  • Manage and coordinated medical and surveillance programs for employees exposed to hazardous materials or working conditions.

  • Manage, direct, supervise and coordinate occupational health related pre-placement, periodic, and termination physical examinations.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: You must meet ALL the following:

  2. REGISTRATION: Active, current registration as a professional nurse in any State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, you must meet any ONE of the following 3 requirements.

  1. You must have one or more years of progressive specialized experienceindependently recognizing or identifying harmful physical agents/potential health hazards/toxic chemicals and the effects; providing clinical nursing care and occupational health and safety nursing services to employees in relation to their occupations and working environments, and providing treatment and administering care for illness of occupational origin and injuries that occur at the workplace.

  2. You completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education. Graduate level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., occupational health, public health, teaching, a clinical specialty, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.
