The James H. Quillen VA Healthcare system is seeking three well-qualified family practice or internal medicine physicians to serve the healthcare needs of our nations veterans at the VA Outpatient Clinics in Jonesville, Marion, or Vansant, Virginia. This is a part-time opportunity to serve at any of the clinics within their operating hours listed in the links below:

The physicians selected will be charged with providing outpatient-only primary care for eligible Veterans in the area. The required skill-set includes current Primary Care clinical proficiency, willingness and ability to encourage teamwork, the ability to implement new initiatives and maintain high standards of performance. A broad working knowledge and experience with VA policies and procedures is desirable, but not mandatory. VA Primary Care Providers are responsible for coordinating all aspects of the patients' care, making referrals to specialists, ordering procedures, ordering and monitoring all medications plus handling of all their patients' acute needs.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty will be within the hours of the clinic's operating days (listed in on each clinic's link listed above). The hours may be flexible at the discretion of the Chief, Primary Care and Community Medicine.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Physicians should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeating bending. They should be emotionally and mentally stable and capable of performing the duties of the position.
