Washington State Nursing Assistant / CNA / Mental Health Technician 1 (Western State Hospital) in Lakewood, Washington

Over twenty years ago, Western State Hospital(WSH) hired a Mental Health Technician 1,who today serves in a management position. We mention this because it speaks to the opportunities this position could hold - especially if you have the right attitude and the compassion to make a difference in the lives of our patients. Although this job is entry level, it provides a living wage, schedule flexibility and a benefit package that few employers offer.

As a Mental Health Technician 1 at WSH, you will find yourself contributing to many meaningful efforts, serving patients on their way back to recovery and sometimes back to the community. Being involved with patients is rewarding in itself, but the challenge of doing so consistently allows for personal growth as well as a deeper understanding of mental illness.

What you will do in this job: In your role, every day or night is a little different and so is the variety of your responsibilities. No matter what the day brings, you will always keep a close eye on the patient's behavior and offer help if needed. If the situation calls for it, you will notify other clinical staff for support. You'll also assist patients with their daily living activities such as hygiene, meals and ambulatory needs. Safety for patients and staff is a top priority at WSH, so making rounds in the ward and taking census of patients is vital. Should a situation become tense, you will need to de-escalate it and intervene as appropriate. You'll be responsible to keep patients' room neat which means you will be doing some simple housekeeping. You will be part of a team that works and supports each other.
