Tesoro Senior Data Analyst in Long Beach, California

Provides high level analytical support to the company primarily related to consolidated financial and operational data. Seeks opportunities to drive inefficiencies out of the business and assists in the development of short and long range planning models.


  • Collect, consolidate and validate operating, financial and market data

  • Develop, use and maintain tools for handling, analysis and validation of data

  • Performs executive level business analysis and creates presentations explaining financial performance for the entire value chain.

  • Support the forecasting and budgeting processes for short term and long term business planning. Provides insight and support to functional leadership in development of strategic plans.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of cross-functional performance drivers. Researches new business developments and ensures that business plans accurately reflect the current environment.

  • Works with complex, unstructured data residing in multiple systems to develop a comprehensive view of the business.

  • Performs ad-hoc analysis in support of strategic initiatives.

  • Remediation Cost Management:*

  • Assists to identify and implement methods to identify remediation costs. Evaluate BI opportunities for forecasting to maximize accuracy in short-term and alignment with longer-term reserve requirements.

  • Tracks and reports actual remediation spending vs. budgets

  • Assists with evaluation of reserves and need for adjustments

o Ensures compliance with reporting requirements

o Assists in preparation of material for various management reviews

o Maintain database with current project and lifecycle assignments, current year spend and reserve balance

  • Performance Management*:

  • Assisting Director to develop, implement and manage performance management system including remediation contractor kpi’s to drive performance improvements

  • Tracks and reports on department performance vs annual expectations

  • Review spend against forecasts and highlight and understand variances

  • Commitment Tracking: Development and management of remediation commitment tracking system

  • Procurement*:

  • Assist with various sourcing efforts including creation of RFP’s and bid evaluations

  • Assist in collecting contractor performance data and providing feedback

  • Assist with preparation of work requisitions and issuance of PO’s

  • Procedures and Policies:*

  • Assist with development of various department technical procedures

  • Communication:*

  • Coordination of staff calls

  • Communication with both internal and external stakeholders.



  • Minimum undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, economics or engineering/geology or 6 years of directly related experience required.


  • Minimum 5 years of financial or business analysis experience required.


  • Extensive data modeling experience required

  • Advanced Excel proficiency

  • Ability to meet time sensitive deadlines and requirements

  • BW/BI, SAP experience preferred
