The incumbents selected for these positions will be under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager of the area to which assigned. Incumbents may be assigned to the following units: South 10-Progressive care unit/Telemetry, South 8-Oncology/Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, North 4-Medical-Surgical /Telemetry, and Direct Observation Unit- Step down. All floors are telemetry capable. All units are inpatient and operate 24 hours a day; incumbents may be expected to work different tours of duty to meet the needs of the Veterans.

Incumbents are responsible for the delivery of patient care in assigned areas based on scientific principles and the nursing process, and functions as a leader by assuming additional responsibility for improvement of patient care. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1) Utilizes the nursing process in managing, developing, implementing and evaluating each patient's individual plan of care with an interdisciplinary team to attain specific clinical outcomes. 2) Implements nursing interventions as necessary for assessing patient response to surgical procedures. 3) Continuously monitors the environment for potential and/or actual safety hazards. Assures adherence to strict safety procedures by all staff. 4) Guides and directs patient care delivery of support staff. Provides input for staff evaluation to rating official(s). 5) Participates in and initiates Quality Assessment and Improvement program activities as applicable to the clinical area. 6) Promotes collaborative practice to provide and expedite quality patient care along the health care continuum; acts as patient advocate to assure appropriateness and quality of care. 7) Assesses learning needs of patients and staff and implements appropriate teaching plan. 8) Initiates and/or participates in studies pertaining to the ward assigned.

Work Schedule:* Multiple schedules. (8 Hour shift, 10 hour shift, or 12 hour are possibilities depending on the unit and availability of work, as well as, other factors.)*

VA Long Beach is a 24/7 operation. incumbents may be expeceted to work days, nights, holidays, weekends, and off-tour to meet the needs of our Veterans.

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Education/Experience Requirements:

1 year of Registered Nurse experience is required. New graduates may apply to the new graduate program when it is available on

Preferred Experience:

1. One (1) or more years ofTelemetry experience is highly preferred.

2. National certification in medical/surgical nursing. (e.g., ANCC)

3. BSN or higher preferred.

Volunteer work helps build criticalcompetencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training andexperience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifyingexperience, including volunteer experience.

*Grade Determinations: *Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

  • Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;
  • Professional Development: performance, education/career development;
  • Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;
  • Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
