Tesoro Manager, Process Controls in Martinez, California

This position manages refinery’s process control and automation team including engineers and technical specialists.

  • Key Responsibilities:*

  • Manages refinery’s process control and automation team. Develops and executes automation strategy defining objectives to align with refinery’s targets for safety, regulatory compliance, reliability and efficiency. Ensures conformance with corporate standards and practices.

  • Leads activities for process controls-related projects including execution of revamps, upgrades and modifications. Interfaces with external engineering firms to ensure projects are properly designed and installed to comply with site requirements and specifications. Provides start-up and commissioning support.

  • Works with engineering, mechanical integrity and reliability groups to ensure Operations is supported. Manages team in workplace performance to assure prompt and effective action is taken to resolve issues and measures are taken to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Ensures unit control is stable through application/adjustment appropriate tuning constraints, evaluation/management of regulatory controls loops, complex control loops, advanced process control, safety instrumented system (SIS) and alarm management. Ensures incorporation of process safety and risk management principles, compliance to process safety management program processes and procedures.

  • Collaborates with Supply Chain Management to ensure appropriate parts inventory. Manages site process control testing facility.

  • Develops and manages team’s organizational capabilities. Mentors and coaches staff and promotes staff’s technical knowledge and skills. Initiates selection, promotion and corrective action(s) when appropriate. Accountable for fair and uniform application of human resources policies.

  • EDUCATION and Experience:*

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering required.

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in progressively responsible positions in refining industry required.

  • Control engineering experience preferred.

  • Additional Position Responsibilities:*

  • Able to work extended hours including nights and weekends in process operations environment. Must be available to respond to upset conditions during off-hours.

  • Technical aptitude to understand process controls challenges and solutions.
