As Alexion has grown substantially in size and complexity, this dynamic company requires an individual to drive accounting close processes, system expertise, shared services and reporting for our US headquarter and North American regional entities. This individual will have full responsibility over the general accounting functions of these entities, overseeing the accounting close, entity level reporting and financial performance, policy compliance and systems. This individual will have a goal to drive efficiencies in our accounting processes, enhance the utilization of our SAP and Finance technology platforms, and ensure that all financial information is prepared in compliance with Alexion financial policies and US GAAP. This individual will be responsible for reporting regional information to our Corporate Accounting team for consolidations and maintain strong business partnerships with key counterparts including, Business Finance, Tax, Treasury, Requisition to Pay and business owners. This individual will be a key leader in our global accounting team fully representing the North American region.

This individual will need to possess outstanding project management skills, attention to detail and an ability to adhere to deadlines. This role will be required to partner with peers in support of cross functional initiatives, senior management and direct reports on a regular basis, require excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to express oneself in a clear and concise manner. This individual will need to be self-motivated, analytical and able to make well-reasoned and timely decisions. This individual should be comfortable identifying and implementing creative solutions to support greater efficiency and effectiveness of processes and procedures and ability to enhance the utilization of our key financial systems. This individual must be comfortable driving change, managing through uncertainty and supporting a high growth company.

Principal Responsibilities

North American regional accounting close process owner:

  • Full financial statement oversight to the consolidated North American Region and our US headquarter entity

  • Owner to closing timelines, processes, key control framework and deliverable for our US and Canadian entities

  • Partner directly with key Business Finance and business owners in support of R&D, Marketing, manufacturing operations and G&A activities. Continued deployment of Finance Accountability framework and accrual reporting capabilities

  • Review existing closing procedures to ensure that they are both effective and efficient

  • Manage an executive level monthly closing package that summarizes key metrics, performance indicators, judgments and significant matters

  • Improve coordination and partnerships with other Alexion departments in support of our close process and cross functional initiatives, including Corporate Accounting, EMEA Regional Accounting, Manufacturing Operations, Business Finance, Requisition to Pay, IT, HR, Payroll, Treasury, Tax, Financial Reporting, Internal Audit and Facilities.

  • Responsible for M&A integration activities, special projects and ad hoc reporting relative to the North American region

  • Analyze, design and propose process improvements, functional specifications and implementation plans to better leverage system capabilities in unison with Accounting Solutions and IT

  • Effectively utilize, manage and oversee performance of our global shared service center – emphasis on leveraging recurring and operational support to realign teams efforts on key projects, business partnering and oversight to performance

Legal Entity Structure and Inter-company Accounting:

  • Oversee North America regional entity structure and related accounting activities, inclusive of headquarter allocations, tolling arrangements for our US manufacturing sites and inter-company billing arrangements

  • Monitor and analyze legal entity forecasted profitability compared to actuals, ensure compliance with global inter-company policies and procedures

  • Ensure quality and completeness of financial statement classification entries associated with headquarter allocations

  • Oversee inter-company billings between US regional entities, coordinate with foreign operations and ensure appropriate documentation is maintained and payments are made timely

  • Support all North America legal entity structuring activity, M&A integration and subsidiary movements


  • Responsible for direct supervision and development of 3 accounting professionals

  • Ability to motivate, lead and teach team members in order to produce high quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects

  • Responsible for appraising performance and motivating team within the accounting function

  • Key accounting stakeholder to our global accounting shared services center, globalization of standard procedures and effective service delivery.

  • Ability to effectively balance level of engagement, hands-on when required to directly support a matter and able to effectively leverage team member’s capabilities and development

  • System savvy and ability to leverage SAP, BPC and BI reporting capabilities


  • CPA required

  • 7+ years of combined Public Accounting and Private Industry accounting experience within a multinational business and responsibilities overseeing a regional or global close

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls and managing a global closing process

  • 3+ years of accounting managerial experience

  • Experience with financial systems inclusive of SAP, Blackline and BPC is preferred, with a clear ability to demonstrate enhanced utilization of system capabilities

  • Advanced skills utilizing Microsoft Suite of products

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively across departmental functions


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required, MBA or Master’s degree preferred
