Position Description

The Associate Director, Media Relations will be responsible for supporting the development and execution of global Media Relations communications strategies for Allergan's external corporate communications programs. This position will assist in expanding current media relations activities including defining trade, business and general media targeting programs and developing press releases and other global media communications materials. Assists in defining key corporate messaging and initial outreach activities to potential media as well as ongoing communications/visits.

The final candidate will be a creative and innovative communications professional responsible for supporting the department development and execution of strategic media and communications engagement plans to promote and enhance Allergan’s corporate brand. The ideal candidate will have strong writing and verbal skills, be able to work collaboratively to craft strategies, messages and execute media outreach on behalf of the company and its leadership, and have experience in all aspects of media relations and corporate communications. This role will be responsible for developing and communicating a compelling corporate narrative and comprehensive approach to media engagement. He/She will have experience developing and cultivating a strong network of media relationships, and have a deep understanding of the evolving global media landscape. Finally, he/she must be adept at engaging media in a fast-paced environment and on a wide range of topics, including corporate, product, financial and industry issues, regulatory milestones, product campaigns, scientific data, and public policy. This individual will report to the Director of Media Relations.

Main Areas of Responsibility

As part of the Corporate Affairs team, this individual will:

  • Collaborate and contribute to the developing/refining of strategy and ongoing engagement with media to shape and advance Allergan’s reputation and corporate narrative.

  • Establish, maintain and strengthen relationships with key business, policy, and healthcare journalists across all media, including digital and social channels. Instill a sound media relations program approach across the entire business.

  • Develop proactive and reactive communications strategies, tactics, and content related to our business, portfolio and pipeline.

  • As part of an integrated, global Corporate Affairs team, work seamlessly with business, advocacy, government affairs and investor relations stakeholders to provide media relations and communications counsel regarding proactive and reactive issues.

  • Work directly with global communications colleagues to execute global tactical plans.

  • Develop media plans to support executive leadership, increasing visibility for company programs, initiatives, and innovation. Help in the writing of press releases and other collateral materials to support corporate and global business segment business activities.

  • Plan for and manage issues that could impact the company’s reputation among key stakeholder audiences, employees or directly impact operations.

  • Outline performance indicators and implement department-wide metrics, analytics and reporting methods in order to measure media success. Build the Brand :

  • Contribute to the crafting of Allergan’s narrative, building visibility for the company with new audiences as the company’s business and leadership evolve.

  • Be a resource for media, working to increase understanding of Allergan’s science, portfolio leadership, pipeline, technology, and social/sustainability efforts.

  • Ensure that Allergan is viewed as the premier source for scientific information related to our therapeutic areas of focus.

  • Further establish and maintain Allergan’s corporate narrative, image and brand - and communicate it appropriately and effectively through all external channels - including social media.

  • Interface with region/country leaders and global communications colleagues to execute global tactical plans.


  • At least 8 years of media/ journalism/public relations/political communications experience

  • Broad-reaching media relations/marketing experience, preferably with publicly held companies similar to that of Allergan

  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills

  • Ability to understand scientific information and data and to communicate it in simple terms to media and to other lay audiences

  • Excellent follow-through, attention to detail and high sense of urgency

  • Strong executive presence; proven ability to effectively and appropriately work with and influence senior management

  • Experience managing issues and crises related to corporate reputation; adept at rapid response in a complex and fast-paced organization

  • Experience managing communications related to a variety of public company transactions

  • Public relations expertise including broad experience in areas such as media relations, advocacy and government affairs

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to successfully influence without authority, and effectively work across functions and personalities.

  • Demonstrated good judgment and ability to effectively prioritize work load.

  • A strategic thinker who is able to make connections across the business and apply them to communications initiatives; anticipates issues and proactively works to solve them.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead communications activities during significant change/corporate evolution.

  • Strong business acumen, preferably related to the pharma/biotech business model, regulatory process and industry current events and issues.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications

  • Strong media relations experience and experience serving as aspokesperson


  • Bachelor'sdegree required, preferably in Journalism, Communications or related field from an accredited college or university
