HIGHWAY OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN 1
Infrastructure Delivery and Operations Division (IDO) Northcentral District
Work Location: 2209 W. Durango, Phoenix, Arizona
2 Positions Available
This position exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Perform a broad scope of basic Introductory level highway operational duties related to items such as operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, delivery of equipment and material, snow removal operations.
Also may lead in routine work assignments and perform more advanced duties in a training capacity.
Attend work unit staff meetings and agency training sessions to acquire knowledge and skills needed for advancement to or for effective performance as a Highway Operations Technician.
Responds to emergency call outs (24 hours a day, seven days a week); must be able to respond to Maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
During winter storm conditions overtime will be required including working nights, weekends and holidays.
This is the apprentice classification with 2 promotional opportunities during the first 3 years when the qualifications for the class, completion of training are met and a recommendation by the supervisor is received; includes incremental increases in base pay with annual promotion up to the Highway Operation Tech 3 level.
Standard Salary for each step progression:
Highway Operations Tech 2: $16.30/hr.
Highway Operations Tech 3: $17.90/hr.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Procedures, practices and methods of the operation, preventive maintenance and minor repair of vehicles and equipment used in roadway operations and roadside operations.
General knowledge of Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, polices and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices and public relations.
Materials, chemicals, equipment and tools used in work activities and established work methods and standards.
MUTCD traffic control for work zones, math, accounting, English, grammar and computer systems.
Applying laws, rules, regulations;
Policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices and public relations;
Using proper materials and tools, vehicles and equipment to perform work activities within established work methods;
Oral and written communication;
Problem solving and interpersonal relationship.

Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions; in hazardous traffic conditions.
Lift/Carry 50 Lbs. from floor to shoulder
Push/Pull 50 Lbs.
Stand for prolong periods
Walk/Run short distances up to ¼ mile
Experience equivalent to a Highway Operations Worker (i.e., operation of construction and maintenance type motorized vehicles and equipment that is utilized in highway maintenance with Federal, State, County or private contractors).
Employment is contingent upon passing a drug test and a medical/physical examination.
A Class “A” Commercial Drivers license (CDL) for a manual transmission (no automatic only restriction) with N (tanker) endorsement is required prior to the start date.
Candidates for this position must complete page 7 and sign the Driver Form on page 8 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
