The mission of the Arizona State Forestry division is to manage and reduce wildfire risk to Arizona’s people, communities, and wildland areas and provide forest resource stewardship through strategic implementation of forest health policies and cooperative forestry assistance programs.

Public Information Officer III - Outreach

The Department of Forestry and Fire Management is seeking a Public Information Officer III who will be responsible for implementing a statewide public information and education campaign for agency outreach. This position’s responsibilities will include the following:

  • Preparing press releases for distribution to state and national newspapers, television and radio stations
  • Writing feature articles for forestry and public-oriented publications
  • Writing, editing and designing an agency newsletter
  • Maintaining graphics for agency booklets, pamphlets, brochures, notices, public service announcements and other materials of general interest


The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of journalism, public relations, advertising and mass communications
  • Television programing, preparation and reproductions of written and photographic materials
  • Common research methods, techniques and procedures, quantitative and qualitative statistical models and internal/external data gathering procedures
  • Principles and practices of public administration with emphasis on planning, organization and management
  • Arizona administrative agencies, their policies and procedures

Skills in:

  • Oral and written communication
  • Data analysis, evaluation and interpretation
  • MS Office Suite products, Windows 2000, database applications and web browsers, specifically Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Microsoft Publisher and design programs such as Adobe Pagemaker, Adobe Photoshop and In Design
  • Persuasive writing

Ability to:

  • Communicate interpersonally
  • Organize and coordinate multiple on-going projects
  • Understand the relevance of facts and legal issues
  • Extract facts from a variety of sources
  • Prioritize, plan, analyze and coordinate projects
  • Design and produce timely and accurate reports and documentation
  • Organize ideas and clearly communicate those ideas
  • Communicate with the press and government officials

Experience in/with broadcast media
