This position is located in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) Department at the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC), Portsmouth, Virginia. This position provides expertise from the occupational health perspective to support OEM department programs. The work of this position involves expert occupational health support and consultation services for the purpose of the OEM Department maintaining optimal functioning of NCPHC's many support and service initiatives. This position plays a pivotal role by providing high-quality consultative services and maintenance of the occupational medical surveillance and certification examination, Asbestos Medical Surveillance Program (AMSP) registry, and technical manuals.

A typical day in the life of an Occupational Health Nurse:

  • Assist and advises on occupational health related issues and in resolving administrative problems.

  • Responsible for the clinical management of issues and provides direct nursing leadership, professional, consultative, and advisory services.

  • Provide consultation, guidance and technical assistance on ambiguous and complex occupational health issues.

  • Serve as the technical expert for Occupational Medicine Physicians, all Occupational Health Nurse specialists, other professional staff, and support staff.

  • Plans work, sets priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work, makes work assignments based on priorities, reviews work, provided training and development plans, and counsels subordinates on performance.

  • Provide oversight of occupational health program staff for adherence to all medical, technical and nursing regiments in stabilizing illnesses, and injuries, recognizing when to refer, and in planning and coordinating the health care needed, given and recommended.

  • Provide technical reporting, guidance, and assistance in matters of occupational health inside and outside the occupational health unit.

  2. REGISTRATION: Active, current registration as a professional nurse in any State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.   1. You must have one or more years of progressive specialized experience performing occupational health nurse work. Examples of this experience includes independently planning, coordinating, and evaluating or managing a comprehensive occupational health program; acting as the technical authority in occupational health; exercising professional oversight over occupational health staff; and performing clinical occupational health nursing services.

The Selective Placement Factors are, Certification as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S) issued by the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses AND *Possession of Basic Life Support Certification. *Failure to document the current certifications in your resume will result in an ineligible rating.
