Salem VA Medical Center is seeking a part-time motivated, enthusiastic Geriatrician to join its experienced staff of physicians and health professionals full-time in the Extended Care Service Line. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to inpatients on the Community Living Center in order to restore Veterans to the highest practicable level of well-being, maximum function and independence, to prevent further decline in health, and to provide comfort and care at the end of life in a home-like environment.

In addition to our continuing commitment to quality Veteran care, Salem VA Medical Center is also a teaching hospital and research center, maintaining both an active R&D; program encompassing multiple specialty practices and three active medical school affiliations with the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

The VA Medical Center of Salem, Virginia is located adjacent to Roanoke, both of which are nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive medical and geriatric care to inpatients on the Community Living Center. Individual procedures and duties performed will be consistent with selected provider’s granted privileges and based upon individual training, qualifications, and experience. In addition to the performance of procedures consistent with privileges granted, the selected individual will be responsible for performing duties to include, but not limited to the following:

  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures consistent with the patient’s care plan;

  • Provides care within the context of a multidisciplinary approach and documents services through appropriate notes;

  • Alternates call coverage with other Salem VAMC physicians;

  • Provides clinical oversight to Physician Assistants, Fellows, and Residents and participates in the education program;

  • Participates in interdisciplinary team activities and provides cross coverage to other programs;

  • Participates actively in delivering in-service training for medical center staff, Geriatric Medicine Fellows, medical residents, and medical students; and supports an environment that promotes academic excellence and encourages continual learning; and

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with other practice areas to ensure adequate and appropriate delivery of long-term care services to Veterans.

  • Citizenship. Candidate must be a citizen of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3g.

  • Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

  • Licensure. Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

  • Residency. Candidate must have completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of VA for the year in which it was completed.

  • English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

REFERENCE: Candidate must meet the appropriate qualification standard for Physicians as defined by VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G2.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the basic qualifications required for this position, the following additional qualifications are necessary for this position:

  • Candidates are requested to be BC/BE in Geriatric Medicine, with additional BC/BE in Hospice and Palliative Care preferred.
