The Division of Non VA Care at the VA Medical Center, Salisbury, NC is seeking a Physician specific to the Supervisory Physician for Care in the Community (Non VA Care) Salisbury VAMC. Physician assigned under the Care in the Community will perform clinical duties as it relates to their scope one day of each work week. This position reports to the Chief of Staff for supervision, and to Care in the Community operationally. The following duties will be as follows and other duties assigned.

  • Serves in management of all Non-VA Care consults and requests for additional services as directed demonstrating sound decision making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians.

  • Performs clinical and administrative review for eligible Veterans to define medical emergencies and service connection eligibility.

  • He or She serves as the physician advisor for all requests for payment of Non-VA healthcare participating in discussions, decisions, and policy making. Responsible for balancing requests for Non-VA Care with regulatory guidelines and within fiscal limitations.

  • Works daily with Chief of Care in the Community (Non-VA Care) to discuss processes, backlogs, vacancies, and quality of care for our veterans within the department.

  • Assists in the training of staff and other stakeholders in the use of Non VA Care.

  • Responsible for providing comprehensive care for Veterans. The incumbent should in the context of a longitudinal relationship, fulfill all medical needs within scope. Evaluates patients in his/her expertise in an outpatient setting; making appropriate referrals/consults, follow-ups, and treatment plans. Performs initial and interim histories and physical examinations on assigned outpatients and/or inpatients, as well as daily physical assessments on patients within his/her expertise. He or She follows acute and chronic physical health problems in the outpatient setting by providing ongoing comprehensive monitoring of these issues and some follow-up on specialty symptoms; provides medication management; orders routine laboratory, radiologic and diagnostic tests on assigned patients; and provides medication adjustments for physical problems. All physicians are responsible to have read the Medical Staff Bylaws and to comply with the Bylaws. All physicians are responsible to complete all mandatory training timely.

  • Writes/dictates consults, general progress notes, post-operative progress notes, and discharge summaries, when appropriate; provides patient education; and applies currently accepted preventive health care measures to patients and/or their families.

This is a Supervisory position and he/she will be responsible for the supervision of subordinate personnel to ensure they provide timely care and sound decisions which comply with generally accepted standards of clinical practice. This includes the authority to accept, amend or reject the work of subordinates.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was complete. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia.

Additional Requirements:

Must be proficient in spoken and written English (for direct patient care).
