The West Texas VA Health Care System (WTVAHCS) provides a variety of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as offering numerous educational programs. Outpatient services include: Ambulatory Care, Mental Health, Women's Health, Transition and Care Management, Home Based Primary Care, Tele-Health, Anticoagulation Clinics, Ophthalmology, and Dentistry. Skilled nursing care and acute rehabilitation is provided in the Community Living Center, with specialty referrals to other VISN 17 facilities and community services. Staffed with approximately 600 employees, the facility serves counties in West Texas and New Mexico area, with a Veteran population of approximately 57,000. The WTVAHCS is part of the VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network, VISN 17 and is centrally located at the crossroads of Interstate 20 and Highway 87 in Big Spring, Texas with Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) located in Abilene, Odessa, San Angelo, Ft. Stockton, Texas and Hobbs, New Mexico.

Responsibilities

The LVN within the Community Based Outpatient Center (CBOC) is an integral part of an interdisciplinary team of healthcare providers. This position requires great flexibility in assisting all team members within the CBOC community within and outside your assigned team. May occasionally be required to perform phlebotomy skills. EKGs, vaccines, and other injectable medications, minor wound care, breathing treatment, glucometer checks, foley catheter changes, chaperone for exams and other treatments will be performed on a regular basis. Be aware of able to effectively utilize the emergency med box when the need arises. Veteran education with the inclusion of family members and other caregivers is performed on a daily basis. Phone follow-ups as needed performed. Excellent, timely, and accurate computer & paper documentation is required. Excellent communication skills are required with the Veteran and team members. Other duties within the scope of practice for an LVN may be assigned by and RN or physician.

*Work Schedule: *M-F 8 hour shifts rotating to early and late shifts, occasional Saturday clinics. Staff will remain in clinic until all Veteran appointments have been completed.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) b. Education. Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the National League for Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency of the National League for Nursing, 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006. (1) Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment. (2) The education requirement is waived for VHA employees who were converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) in implementation of Public Law 98-160, enacted November 21, 1983, and for VHA employees converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7405 in implementation of Public Law 99-576, enacted October 28, 1986; and for their future personnel actions under this authority. The waiver will not apply to persons appointed under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 after these conversions. c. Licensure. Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a graduate licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia. An LPN who has or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16 of this part.

Grade Determination.Salary will be determined by the Nurse Professional Standards Board based on experience and education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light items. The requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or assisting patients. Must be able to travel to outlying CBOC;s or Outreach Clinics and possess a valid driver's license.

DESIGNATED DRUG TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a drug testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
