This Associate Medical Director (AMD) position requires being forward thinking and innovative in public health policy development, program leadership, and in applying clinical expertise to ensure high quality medical care is provided for our workers. Labor and Industries is the third largest public payor of health care in Washington State. The Office of the Medical Director (OMD) is responsible for ensuring the treatment provided to workers for occupational injuries and diseases is of high quality, meaning it is appropriate, timely, safe, effective, and cost-effective.
OMD accomplishes this through four core functions:
a) providing direct clinical consultation related to claims; b) providing professional education to health care providers and other stakeholders; c) formulating and implementing L&I;'s health care policies and guidelines; and d) conducting health care research to identify best health care practices.

Some of what you will do
- Ensure alignment and coordination of L&I;'s strategic planning and health care innovation efforts to improve occupational health care and prevent disability for individual workers and on a population basis;
- Leadership provider education, training, and outreach efforts in collaboration with other AMDs and OMD staff to increase provider knowledge and understanding of Washington's workers' compensation system and health care innovation efforts,
- Direct clinical consultation for Insurance Services staff regarding complex claims, coverage decisions, and financial incentives for innovative models of occupational health care;
- Leadership, clinical consultation, and participation with L&I;'s advisory committees, and external stakeholders in the development and implementation of health policies, programs and initiatives;
Engagement with public-private and interagency groups to address statewide issues to help increase health care quality (safety and effectiveness) and reduce unnecessary cost. Your success will be measured by your interest and ability to:
Work collaboratively with individuals and groups who have diverse interests, needs, and abilities (e.g. nurses, physicians, attorneys, business and labor leaders, claim examiners, data analysts, researchers, members of the public);
- Understand the methods and benefits of strategic planning that support L&I;'s mission and goals and use innovative methods of implementing the plans;
- Develop innovative ways to coordinate collaborative models of health care delivery and purchasing and assess their effectiveness;
- Apply clinical expertise to assist L&I; staff (e.g. nurses, pharmacists, claim examiners) in the medical management of complex claims;
- Organize and lead development of educational programs for health care providers in applying best practices for clinical care and administrative simplicity.
- Understand and work comfortably in a multidimensional environment, e.g. medical, legal, political, economic, adjudicative, and innovative. Required Qualifications
- Valid Washington State Medical License and Driver's License (must be able to gain WA medical license prior to employment)
- 3 years' experience in medical, occupational health, or quality improvement leadership in an institution or organization.
- Demonstrated abilities in effective problem solving, decision making, and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups (e.g. staff, the public, associations, and other agencies) who have diverse backgrounds and interests.
- Actively and effectively manage projects to successful completion.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a public service orientation; keep others informed and actively prevent or resolve conflict.
- Demonstrated leadership in creating an environment of collaboration and cooperation that generates potential and real opportunities for success.
- Treat everyone with respect and courtesy; actively seek feedback; listen to and take time to understand others' needs and concerns. Take appropriate risks and challenges, including when to compromise and when to take a stand; and actively seek new ideas and opportunities to support the agency's mission and goals to improve health outcomes and prevent disability for injured workers.
- Experience in implementing innovation and/or reform in a health related organization.
- Board certification in occupational medicine, internal medicine, family practice, orthopedic surgery, physiatry or related field, with at least 3 years' experience in the field, and/or
- Masters' degree in public health or related public health field (epidemiology, health administration, health services research).
