Purpose of Job

The Finance Shared Services Centre in Cork manages and processes activities on behalf of a number of customer entities, one of which is the payroll process. As a member of the Finance Shared Services Team, the purpose of this role is to manage the International payroll process (currently 8 payrolls in 5 countries), ensuring that employees are paid accurately and on time, that third parties involved in the process – internal and external – are managed effectively, that payroll costs are recorded in a timely and accurate manner and that McKesson is compliant. The person who takes on this role will also support the Shared Services Manager in business development activities and will lead or support the transition of payrolls to the Shared Services Centre and external payroll partner.


  • Management of payroll process

  • Liaise with HR Operations and managers regarding the monthly submission of payroll changes/additions to the external Payroll Processing Partner in line with agreed payroll calendar

  • Review and facilitate sign off ‘Pre Commit’ Payroll Reports which set out the gross, net and pay components per employee, reconciling them back to data submitted. Sign off of such reports grants the external Payroll Processing Partner permission to transfer funds to employee accounts

  • Review ‘Post Commit’ Payroll Reports, ensuring any adjustments have been processed correctly and on time and that employee payslips reflect that initial changes submitted and any updates/adjustments

  • Maintain relevant payroll documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures for the payroll process.

  • Accounting and Compliance

  • Prepare and post payroll journals to general ledger

  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations

  • Complete relevant share scheme return and submit to tax authorities

  • Liaise with E&Y, responsible for processing ‘shadow’/expat payroll, to ensure compliance

  • Liaise with tax officials and Payroll Processing Partner to ensure required information is submitted accurately and on time to ensure compliance

  • Engage with HR and Comp & Bens Teams to ensure that all benefits and deductions are treated correctly internally and externally by third parties

  • Seek external tax expertise as appropriate & act as SME at all times on Payroll related matters

  • Engage third parties to advise on treatment of pay elements, if required, and liaise with tax officials to ensure compliance.

  • Query management

  • Review, manage and respond to any queries raised by employees or other internal stakeholders to HR which have been forwarded on to payroll or directly to payroll

  • Liaise with HR Operations, Compensation and Benefits Team, HR Business Partners or other members of finance in an effort to address a query as required.

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to interpret and analyse external tax advice to ensure the correct treatment in payroll.

  • Plan for and manage the transition of payrolls to the Shared Services Centre and Payroll Process Partner

  • Represent the payroll function on multi disciplinary project teams. – eg new acquisitions or joint ventures

QualificationsExperience, Education, Skills and Competencies



  • IPASS or similar qualification

  • Six Sigma or Lean would be beneficial to the role to encourage a culture of continuous improvement

  • Payroll specific training would also be beneficial, particularly in relation to tax treatment of pay elements and other regulatory information

  • Strong experience accounting for payroll in ERP system


  • At least 6 years payroll experience including 3 years experience managing International Payroll in a shared services environment, interacting with customers and third party Payroll Processing Partner. Strong experience in accounting and compliance for payroll is essential.
