About the Agency

This position serves as the Mechanical Engineer for the Coining Division and is responsible to the Chief, Coining Division at the San Francisco and West Point Mints. The incumbent determines ways to utilize higher levels of technology to improve mechanical processes such as die preparation, blanking, upsetting and coining. The incumbent defines performance requirements, develops statement of work and required capability from the private sector. The incumbent of this position serves as an expert in all mechanical and associated industrial, electrical, and manufacturing disciplines: is a project manager for major mechanical equipment and systems modernization projects and is the principal Project management advisor to the field activities for the Coining Division.


As a Mechanical Engineer, you will:

  • Responsible for the efficiency and quality of all mechanical systems and equipment being considered for Mint operation, conceptualize plans, analyze and improve the integrated systems of personnel, material, facilities, and equipment. Develop and improve procedures and policies for publication and application at Mint operating activities. From knowledge of mechanical production systems and equipment and the latest developments in related technologies, identifies areas for additional study or needed developmental projects.

  • Review regular reports of maintenance and manufacturing activities and identify aberrant maintenance patterns, equipment operation problems, and systems deficiencies. Define problems and courses of remedial action, such as additional guidance or technological improvements. Provide technical support to the engineering maintenance staff to ensure continuous and efficient operation of coin production equipment, material handling systems, power and utility equipment systems, and manufacturing support equipment for a high volume, three shift production environment. Continually analyze production operations, attend science and technology fairs and seminars reads technical journals, and visit sites of advanced technologies.

  • As project engineer for mechanical engineering developmental project, conceive, and prepare, project plan, prepare invitation for bid specifications, act on bids, and manage and direct project activities. When necessary work jointly with other division engineers and develop criteria to monitor and control contractor progress and performance. Is in charge of a large number of modernization contracts at all times.

Specialized experience for the GS-13 is one year of experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent in other public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.   • collaborating with other professionals on efforts to improve engineering and manufacturing quality performance; AND
