The Emergency Medicine Physician (EMP) is expected to provide comprehensive patient care to any patient that presents to the Emergency Department. The incumbent is accountable to the Emergency Department Director assuring the most effective delivery of care in Emergency Department Service. The EMP must be board certified in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery or Family Practice. Required skills include but not limited to: abdominal paracentesis, arthrocentesis, bladder catherization, cardiac pacing, central venous line placement, cervical immobilization, contrast injection for imaging, ekg interpretation, lumbar puncture, local anesthesia, incision and drainage of abscess, nasogastric or orogastric intubation, thoracentesis, and wound management and repair.

The EMP performs the administrative components of patient care management such as:

  • Actively involved in teaching residents and students.
  • Participates in the educational programs for the medical staff.
  • Participates in monitoring the quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care.
  • Complies with EDIS patient flow data entry requirements.
  • Attends Emergency Department team meetings.
  • Demonstrates ethical conduct and serves as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization.
  • Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
  • Attends Medicine Service monthly staff meetings.
  • Completes medical records in accordance with Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
  • Participates in Medical Staff committee assignments.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Chief of Medicine.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure. (4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1. Applicants must provide a copy of their college transcripts. c. Licensure. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. d. Physical Requirements. Must pass a pre-employment physical. e. English Language Proficiency.Physicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic;religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Physician must be trained/Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, or,

  • Physician trained/Board Certified in Family Practice or Internal Medicine with extensive Emergency Medicine experience, and,

  • Physician must possess and maintain current BLS certification and ACLS certification
