Title: Director, Data Science - Incubation LabLocation: United States-Connecticut-HartfordJob Number: 1800811Overview of the PositionThe Hartford seeks energetic and passionate data science leaders to build and create best in class data science teams focused on industry leading modeling and analytic strategies.  Our data science leaders play a significant role partnering with our businesses to better understand and improve the customer journey while evolving the team’s capabilities to further develop impactful products and drive successful outcomes.   As a Director, you will play a significant role in partnering with business leaders and data teams for a better understanding of the customer journey across multiple lines of business and set the roadmap to support those lines of business needs.  As a Director you will guide a team in testing vendors’ emerging technology, capabilities and data.. You will explore these assets through the lens of a business use case and establish a rhythm within the data science community.  Solutions tested by this multi-faceted team will support a wide range of business areas which include underwriting, claim, operations, risk engineering, and digital analytics. Our Data Scientist toolbox consists of but not limited to predictive Modeling Techniques, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, Unsupervised learning, and Augmented intelligence.  In addition, our Directors set focus on insuring that the tactical implementation of solutions aligns with the strategic plan set by the leadership team. As a Director, you will support the long term plan to evolve the department’s capabilities to further develop and deliver impactful products to drive outcomes for both the business and clients.Responsibilities:Oversee, develop and/or mentor a highly productive team of Data Scientist to develop, test, and validate vendor technology, capabilities, and data using supervised and / or unsupervised techniques.Support continuation of best bets through MVP development and transition to production teams.Collaborate and partner with business stakeholders to establish a vision and create a culture that treats analytics as a corporate asset.  Review work with leadership and partners on an ongoing basis to calibrate deliverables against expectations.Advance the departments capabilities by creating and deploying long term tools to continually evolve the business. Develop strategies to achieve targeted business objectives. Implement these strategies and follow through to successful conclusion.Present complex modeling to decision-makers that maximizes knowledge transfer and bottom-line impact of modeling results.Apply economic, quantitative, and statistical skills in the development of models to drive profitable growth and make sound business decisions.Evangelize analytics opportunities of the company with customers and business partners.Actively participate in the talent management process for hiring, onboarding, training and development of staff.Collaborate with other leaders to provide timely feedback and development plans and opportunities for staff.Help develop and implement training opportunities for research staff and others in the organization.Qualifications: Experience & SkillsMaster’s or Ph.D. in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Quantitative Economics or other similar analytical field .5-8 years of relevant experience in Research Function in Insurance or Financial Services or related field.2 years directing a team, setting priorities and plans to meet business goals and objectives. Experience in large scale operations environments (Claim Centers, Call Centers, Manufacturing) a plus.Experience managing technical personnel in project based environment.Technical/Functional Skills Expert subject matter expertise in data modeling.Strong strategic thinking and exceptional analytical capability. Strong verbal/written communication skills; Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels across the organization. Requires sophisticated business acumen in order to successfully translate complex technical topics into business solutions and strategies.Demonstrated track record of executing change to core business processes through the innovative use of quantitative techniques.Demonstrated project management experience.Competencies Advanced negotiating, influencing, and conflict resolution skills at all organizational levels.Drive and commitment to what is necessary to get the job done efficiently, thoroughly, and professionally.  Innovative.
