Dow Chemical Research Scientist in Indianapolis, Indiana

Dow AgroSciencesis seeking aSenior Research Scientistwith experience in gene discovery, protein biochemistry and protein engineering to join our Discovery Research and Development (R&D) team. TheSenior Research Scientistwill, as part of a team, deliver innovative solutions for insect control and herbicide tolerance technologies. The successful candidate will work in a cross functional team environment to lead independent projects and project teams.

R esponsibilities include:

  • Define and conduct research across multiple project areas using in-depth knowledge and proactive application of scientific principles, theory and experimental design with working knowledge in multiple disciplines.

  • Develop and implement technical solutions through hands-on experimentation/problem-solving for research problems that are well defined across multiple project areas.

  • Apply scientific knowledge, technical skills, and leadership to deliver high quality scientific results that are aligned with R&D project plans and create value for Dow.

  • Demonstrate expertise in use of experimental/computational/theoretical methods and data handling.

  • Participate in the innovation process as it applies to your specific projects and contributing to the innovation process through new opportunity identification.

  • Consistently apply the Scientific Method in the planning and execution of experimental plans and problem solving. Formulate hypotheses and develop experimental plans to test hypotheses.

  • Leverage Six Sigma tools and methodology to solve complex problems with projects of regional or global scope.

  • Keep current with developments in relevant area of technology and identify and implement applications which will benefit Dow.

  • Have an in-depth understanding of the patent and journal literature across related areas of technology.

  • Understand and incorporate the competitive landscape in technology mapping. Work with legal department to manage IP and secure freedom to practice and patent new technologies.

  • Provide constructive input to project participants.

  • Mentor junior level scientists and technologists.

  • Delivers presentations or reports that distill complex ideas into clear results and proposals; communicates appropriately to influence internal and external audiences.

  • Communicate and appropriately document work in the form of internal reports/presentations and external publications/presentations (when appropriate). Draft and submit patent disclosures as appropriate.

  • Utilizes in-depth knowledge of business ambitions, goals, and strategies to define project concepts.

  • Serve as SME or project leader on large multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input and deliver results aligned with team deliverables.

  • Develops strategies for using external contact network; demonstrated influence to external organizations that impact and contribute to Dow success.

  • Maintain university/3rd party contacts to keep technologies at state of the art level.

  • Serves as the EH&S advocate for work group, ensuring understanding and adherence to policies and procedures. Leads team in promotion of best safety practices, habits, and behaviors

  • Technical leadership in the conception, execution and delivery of new technology for the input traits market

  • Development of research projects and project plans

  • Interfacing with internal and external collaborators to accelerate delivery of research milestones

This position is located at Dow AgroSciences' global headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral or postdoctoral degree in Genomics, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Protein Engineering or a related field, with a focus on applied outcomes benefiting modern agriculture

  • Five or more years of industry experience.

  • Experience in the discovery and mechanistic characterization of insecticidal proteins and herbicide tolerance traits, and protein engineering for improved attributes

  • Specific skill sets should include molecular biology, biochemistry, and work in relevant high throughput model systems.

  • Experience in working with insect model organisms and pests of agronomic importance

  • Experience with statistical data analysis and bioinformatics

  • Demonstrated abilities in Interpersonal effectiveness to lead and motivate project teams

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Evidence of technical achievement as evidenced by publication record

  • Experience in translating discovery research to product candidates

  • Background in gene expression and plant cell biology

  • E xperience leading and developing people

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Genomics, Insect Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Protein Engineering or a related field

  • Five or more years of experience in the agricultural biotechnology industry
