ManTech Environmental Scientist, Associate in Lompoc, California

ManTech International is a leader in advanced technologies to help government and industry manage and protect information, support and maintain critical systems, and develop integrated systems to handle complex needs.

However, ManTech also has a small team (25 people) of biologists, ecologists and GIS professionals based out of California who work on federal contracts with various military installations across the Western region. This satellite team works with military and civilian personnel on federal landholdings to responsibly and effectively manage land and wildlife for conservation.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, mid-level biologist with excellent taxonomic skills to be based out of our Lompoc, CA office. This position will work on a variety of tasks, both field- and office-based, and will be expected to prepare technical reports and participate in interdisciplinary teams for various natural resource management activities. The applicant will have a minimum of eight to ten years experience—specifically with California and southwestern ecosystems but preference will be given to applicants with central coast flora and fauna knowledge. Additionally, the applicant will have strong proficiency with MS Office, ArcDesktop, and ArcGIS Online software

The individual must have demonstrated experience conducting surveys and identifying/keying central CA flora, be an expert at using Jepson, and collecting herbaria specimens. Additionally, the individual must be comfortable identifying California herpetofauna and avian species. Specific areas of expertise should include surveying for and determining proposed project effects on local wildlife species and plant communities, federally-listed species and their habitats (e.g., California red-legged frog, California tiger salamander, vernal pool fairy shrimp, southwestern willow flycatcher, steelhead, etc.), and familiarity with all applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to biological resources. Applicants with previous invasive/native plant survey and mapping experience and possession of 10(a)1(a) permits for handling and capturing listed species is also desirable.

Opportunities for travel to other projects throughout the western region are also available and applicants should expect this to occupy 25% of their time.
