Job Description

Job Summary:

Coordinates and facilitates patient admission according to patient acuity, bed availability, and required services.


  • Collaborates with the nursing staff and multidisciplinary team members to place patient in appropriate level of care to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Initiates care management process including pre-registration and insurance verification.

  • Stays informed of changes in managed care and communicates procedural and financial impact to admitting physicians during the reservation/scheduling process.

  • Reviews medical reports from referring hospitals or physician offices and relays information to nursing unit.

  • Exceptional phone etiquette to both internal and external customers. Maintaining a calm attentive voice to provide confidence that the caller is the top priority at that time.

  • Coordinates components related to the admission/transfer of emergent, urgent and elective patients into an accepting facility from referring hospitals, clinics, urgent care clinics and physician offices with appropriate level of care and timely, appropriate mode of transport.

  • Systematic processing of patient acuity and expert level of clinical decision making, to facilitate the patient flow through the continuum of care.

  • Ability to document and prioritize patient information to formulate an accurate picture of the patient and his/her condition for accepting physicians, nurses or other healthcare workers.

  • Screens admissions, using approved criteria, for appropriateness of level of care and bed assignments. Educates nurses, physicians and ancillary staff in level of care and admission/transfer issues/ opportunities.

  • Tracks and trends barriers to patient flow. Facilitates patient throughput with an ongoing focus on quality, efficiency and exceptional customer service.

  • Coordinate with Bed Placement Specialist for timely transfer, appropriate bed assignment and to ensure the patients information is accurate.

  • Recognizes we are linked to one another by a common purpose, serving our patients and our community. That we are team members with our physicians and co-workers and that we each deserve respect and support

  • Builds positive relationships with nursing units, nursing managers and supervisors and Nursing Leadership to ensure the appropriate placement of patients based on priority, acuity, care needed as well as treatment anticipated.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple complex tasks in a stressful environment.

  • May make bed assignments and any other responsibilities as assigned.



  • Required Credential(s):

  • One or more of the following:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Tennessee Board of Nursing or current home state license for multi-state license recognition "Compact State" obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.


  • Diploma

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing

Work Experience:

  • Greater than one year of clinical experience. Acute care experience preferred.
