Job Details:

VCU Health System's Inpatient Access Services is seeking a full time Inpatient Access Supervisor to provide supervision, direction, and leadership and daily operational oversight to the functions of pre-admissions, registration, pre-certification, inpatient reception, insurance verification, cash collections and quality assurance and any process/activity in Patient Access Services. Optimizes staff performance through coordination of work load distribution and staff reassignments; communication and information updates and feedback regarding expected outcomes and performance. Interviews, hires, trains, disciplines and evaluates Patient Access Services staff. Serves as the first line contact for Emergency Services Registration staff to problem solve issues and workloads. Performs all managerial tasks and functions in the absence of the Inpatient Access Manager for both Patient Access Services and Emergency Services Registration.


Supervises staff and the daily operations of Patient Access Services. Serves as point of contact for Emergency Room Registration in absence of manager.

Coordinates and assigns daily work assignments.

Serves as departmental contact and liaison with other VCUHS Departments.

Identify and implement process change to improve service and staff productivity.

Hires and trains Patient Access Services staff. Approves/denies leave request. Evaluates staff performance with 2nd level of review/signature from Patient Access Manager.

Manages Patient Access Services and Emergency Services Registration in absence of Manager.

Supervise Patient Access Services registration, pre-registration, insurance verification, and authorization activities to include collecting and receipting payment, to include collecting and receipting payment of inpatient and outpatient procedures.

Responsible for hiring, supervising, and executing any personnel action required to insure qualified personnel are performing duties.

Keep departmental staff abreast of priorities, activities, and communications of the department and how they relate to the hospital.

Implement, enhance, and monitor on-going initiatives designed to reduce errors. Additionally, processes will be implemented to improve missing elements, point of service collections, and consistent JACHO compliance. Critique and revise policies, procedures, and work patterns with the department to ensure effective work measures.



Associates Degree in Business, Accounting or closely related field from an accredited program

Minimum of one (1) year of previous lead or supervisory work experience

Minimum of three (3) years of previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting (acute care hospital, physician office, medical practice, etc.)

Experience with medical terminology, medical insurance, HMO, managed care, GE/IDX, computerized order entry, appointment scheduling and medical coding requirements

Previous experience with Microsoft Office applications (at the intermediate level) and e-mail/calendaring


Completion of medical terminology and/or other healthcare related courses

Bachelors Degree in Business, Accounting or closely related field from an accredited program

Two (2) or more years of previous supervisor/management experience

Four or more years of previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting (e.g. academic medical center, doctor's office, medical practice, etc.)
